An FBI special agent who testified for Republicans as a whistleblower was suspended from the agency for leaking classified information to a right-wing group, according to a bureau official, as first reported by NBC.

Garret O’Boyle had testified that the FBI was intentionally mishandling investigations during a public hearing by the House Select Committee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, and he accused the agency of retaliation for speaking out, resulting in a suspension from his post.

O’Boyle is now being accused of lying to Congress about leaking sensitive information before his suspension, according to House Committee on the Judiciary Democrats. FBI internal investigators discovered that O’Boyle leaked confidential investigative information to Project Veritas, a conservative group famous for recording undercover videos, NBC reported.

The report stated, Rep. Jerry Nadler and Del. Stacey Plaskett wrote a letter to AG Merrick Garland asking for an investigation into O’Boyle to find out if he lied to Congress.

Russell Dye, a spokesperson for the Weaponization subcommittee, said in a statement, “Democrats are so desperate to distract from Justice Department wrongdoing that they’re willing to embarrass themselves with frivolous attacks on brave FBI whistleblowers. Garret O’Boyle is a proud veteran and experienced law-enforcement officer who has served our nation with honor and distinction. His only crime was speaking out about FBI abuses, and because he exercised his conscience, shameless Democrats now seek to smear his name.”

House Judiciary Dems tweeted Thursday, “Ranking Member @RepJerryNadler and Congresswoman @StaceyPlaskett are asking Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate whether Garret O’Boyle, who was presented as an FBI whistleblower by Republicans, is guilty of lying to Congress and perjury.”
