PALMDALE, Calif. (KABC) — The suspect accused of shooting and killing a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy while he was in his patrol vehicle in Palmdale has been arrested, authorities confirmed.

Kevin Cataneo Salazar, 29, was taken into custody early Monday morning after barricading himself in a home for several hours, Sheriff Robert Luna said during a press conference.

“Thirty-six hours after the murder of our deputy, the men and women of our department arrested him early this morning.”

Luna said law enforcement officials got their break in the case when community members came forward Sunday with information that led them to Salazar.

When authorities served a search warrant on the home where the suspect was on Monday, the family all came out except Salazar, who barricaded himself inside the house.

“They deployed chemical agents and the suspect ultimately surrendered,” Luna announced Monday afternoon. “Investigators recovered numerous firearms and the vehicle of interest that was depicted in the flyer that we put out yesterday.”

The horrifying murder happened just outside the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station Saturday evening, as Deputy Clinkunbroomer was simply stopped at a red light in his sheriff’s department SUV when Salazar pulled up beside him in a gray Toyota Corolla and opened fire, then drove away.

Clinkunbroomer, 30, was an 8-year veteran of the sheriff’s department and had just gotten engaged four days earlier. He was rushed to the hospital, but could not be saved.
