Bill Maher dived into the Oscars controversy in his show on Friday, saying that Jada Pinkett Smith should ‘thank God’ that alopecia is her biggest medical concern.
‘If you are so lucky in life as to have that be your medical problem, just say ‘thank God,” the HBO Real Time host joked to his panelists, attorney Laura Coates and former presidential and New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang.
The article goes on to state the following:
‘It’s not life threatening. It’s part of — for most people, 80 percent of men, 50 percent of women — it’s part of aging,’ Maher continued.
’Aging is, trust me I know, it’s the degradation of the flesh. It happens to all of us,’ said Maher, who is 66.
Pinkett Smith’s husband, Will Smith, slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars in front of a live audience and cameras broadcasting the event after Rock joked about Pinkett Smith’s bald head look.
Pinkett Smith has alopecia areata, a disorder that causes hair-loss. It differs from androgenic alopecia, a condition that causes pattern baldness often affecting aging men and women.
Maher said Smith should not have been so sensitive about his wife’s hair loss.
“You know, just put on a f***ing wig like everybody else at the Oscars if it bothers you so much,” Maher suggested.
In footage taken during the incident, Pinkett Smith appears to be laughing at Rock’s jokes after he was slapped as the comedian valiantly tried to compose himself and continue with his presentation of an award. Some wondered that she was able to appreciate the humor in the situation after the slap, but not before when Rock cracked the joke about her hair.

During the panel discussion on Maher’s show, Coates said she was taken aback that the audience gave Smith a standing ovation when he was awarded the Best Actor award shortly after the slap assault.
“I thought, ‘Why is he even there to get the award?’” said Coates, who is also a former federal prosecutor.
Yang suggested it was because ‘he’s Will Smith.”
“Anyone else would have been ushered out,” Yang said.
“They’re always talking about micro-aggressions,” Maher said, alluding to the Hollywood crowd who was applauding Smith. “Suddenly, they were OK with this.”
He said the incident “showed broken morals.”
