California’s first-in-the-nation reparations panel voted Tuesday to limit state compensation to the descendants of free and enslaved black people who were in the U.S. in the 19th century, rejecting previous proposals to include all black people.

The group also opened eligibility to free black people who migrated to the U.S. in the 19th century, citing difficulties in documenting genealogy and the risk at the time of becoming enslaved.

The article goes on to state the following:

Compensation could include free college, assistance buying homes and launching businesses, and grants to churches and community organizations.

Supporters of the proposal argued that a reparations plan based on lineage instead of race had a better chance of surviving legal challenges.

After hours of heated debate, the motion passed 5-4.

The report also provides the following details:

Panel members favoring the lineage approach also argued black immigrants who chose to migrate to the U.S. in the 20th and 21st centuries did not share the trauma of people who were kidnapped and enslaved.

Some committee members argued in favor of reparations that include all black Americans because they too suffer from systemic racism in housing, education and employment. They also said it was difficult to prove lineage and that slaveholders often shipped people to work in various plantations in and outside the country.

California is the only state to move forward with a reparations study, as Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation in 2020 to create a two-year task force with the “mission to study the institution of slavery and its harms and to educate the public about its findings.”

  1. The only slaves in California are the taxpayers whose non representatives are throwing their hard earned tax dollars to the wind.

  2. That’s like appointing a bunch of Irishmen to determine if everyone should drink beer. What a crock of 5hit. These people were never slaves. They don’t deserve a penny. Systemic racism isn’t the problem. Being a complete turd is the problem. There are millions of successful black who worked for everything they have like every other race of people that work hard. Screw off, Newsom. This is yet another reason why CA is a complete 5hithole.

  3. California must be feeling guilty even though no one today was born back then to have slaves. All these democrats are spending money they don’t have. Look at Biden!

  4. Well I for one think if they give reparations to blacks then why not to American Indians who had their land stolen from them and then March off to reservations. How many of them died at the hands of the government on the trail of tears?? What about the Irish that were trapped as indentured slaves by rich tyrants who worked them like dogs and were never released??? What about the Jewish that were in slavery for over 400 years and are still treated horribly. Hey I have an idea…. How about everyone quit complaining about what your ancestors endured And work to make this world a better place … Oh and get a job and quit asking for handouts when you live a life more prosperous than your ancestors ever dreamed of. IMO

  5. Why don’t they get reparations from the Africans who caught their ancestors and sold them into slavery? Or don’t blacks have to pay reparations to other blacks? I’m confused.

  6. I agree 💯%. There were Irish slaves, Chinese slaves(building the railroad), the treatment of Native Americans and the lose of their land/home. There were even white slaves.
How about the Japanese/Americans that were stripped of their homes, businesses, wealth, and freedom(in the USA) during WWII and put in Internment Camps for years. The US gave them nothing when they were released. That was in our lifetime not 200 years ago.
When slaves got there freedom, they were given the opportunity to go back to their homeland or they could stay here and the government gave each family 40 acres and a mule, as reparations. The government confiscated 400,000 acres from private land owners giving 40 acres to every freed family. The people that actually suffered through slavery are the ones that received reparations and they are the only ones that deserved it. IMO
