House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., refuted NBC Peacock host Mehdi Hasan after he suggested the movement to defund the police didn’t hurt Democrats in 2020 House races.

In a Thursday appearance on “The Mehdi Hasan Show,” Clyburn blasted Hasan’s suggestions as “poppycock,” declared that defunding the police was a “nonstarter,” especially among Black voters, and described the movement as “a chokehold around the Democratic Party.”

The article goes on to state the following:

“You have been quite critical of the left of your party. The Democrats lost a net dozen House seats last November despite winning the White House. You’ve been very critical of the party’s progressive wing for ‘sloganeering,’ you say, with movements like ‘Medicare for all’ and ‘defund the police,'” Hasan said, citing a study claiming voters paid little attention to Democrat calls to defund the police.

“So is the whole attention on defund the police really a deflection by the party leadership from your own failures? That’s what your critics on the left would say.”

“That is absolutely poppycock. I know what I’m talking about. I’m out here with the voters every day. I did a town hall last night … and I can tell you defund the police is a nonstarter, even with Black people,” Clyburn continued. “If you don’t think that’s true, then look at the results of what just happened in New York City’s election. So the proof is in the pudding. I know what I’m talking about.”

WATCH:

After polls have shown backlash to the defund the police movement, Democrats appeared to have flipped the blame on Republicans.

The White House accused Republicans of defunding the police because a majority of the GOP voted against Biden’s $1.9 trillion ‘American Rescue Plan,’ which allocated billions to communities for local policing.

However, there is no specific text in the plan that mandates the money to be used on policing, as reported by the Washington Post. The outlet slapped the White House with three Pinocchios for the claim that Republicans are defunding police.

Additionally, when asked by Fox News White House correspondant Peter Doocy to back up those claims, Press Secretary Jen Psaki could not name one Republican who called to defund the police.

  1. Hahahahaha. Look what just happened in NYC???? You mean the voter fraud by the people hosting the election? My guess is people leaving NYC won’t care about the crime after they leave.

Honestly, I’m all for defunding police and anyone else they want to defund as long as it’s only done in their Dem run cities, counties, and states.

CA’s lack of accountability is really paying off in Nevada these days. I bet there are people in Nevada that care about CA no longer enforcing laws.

  2. Black voters have been subjected to crap for decades by Democrats. They are used to it by now. It’s a shame that the Dems treat them that way while blaming everyone else for their problems.

  3. Sure republicans ran on defund the police! You really think you can flip that around on republicans when democrats are leading the charge. But the blame where it belongs leftist socialist. Look at every democrat state. Seems that’s where most of the problems are at. Morons

  4. Cleyburn is full of it. Many of us old centrist Democrats abandoned the Democrat Party and became Independents and even Republicans in 2019/2020 for 4 reasons – 1) Dems defund the police rhetoric, BLM/ANTIFA and national unrest, 2) we couldn’t understand Biden as our candidate, and he hid in the basement 3) our party abandoned us, becoming too radical and too far left and 4) despite Trump’s hyperbole coupled with Pelosi’s vitriol and hypocrisy and media distortion , Trump had been an effective president.

    • Yep, and many more of us left the party years before that, because the party progressively lost its senses.

I myself was a JFK Democrat for 40 years. The first 10 years or so I spent trying to reason with Republicans. The next 30 I spent trying to reason with my fellow Democrats, as they became progressively more arrogant and unreasonable.

I walked from the party in 2008. My advice to any person of conscience still in the Democratic Party is do not just walk away — RUN!

  5. If we defund anything, how about we defund Congress? Lot of dipshits there that represent lobbyists rather than their constituents. And a full salary for the rest of their lives! That is beyond ridiculous.
