Authorities in Texas are on the hunt for an inmate serving a life sentence for murder who escaped from a transport bus after stabbing the driver.
Gonzalo Lopez, 46, escaped custody Thursday after he got out of his restraints and overpowered the driver of a bus carrying 16 prisoners, officials said. Lopez allegedly stabbed the driver in the left hand with an unknown object, causing the driver to pull over in Centerville, Texas.
The article goes on to state the following:
Lopez fled the scene on foot while another officer on the bus fired his service weapon at him. Officials said they do not know if any of the shots fired hit Lopez.
Officials said that there were no life threatening injuries and no other prisoners escaped.
There was a precautionary lockdown Thursday at Centerville Independent School District and classes were canceled on Friday.
Leon County Sheriff’s office are encouraging local residents to lock the doors to both their homes and vehicles while they continue to search for Lopez.
Lopez was convicted in 2006 for capital murder and there is currently a $15,000 reward leading to his capture.
Reporter Brian Entin shared a video Friday afternoon from the area where law enforcement are searching for Lopez, and explained how the convicted killer managed to pull off his escape.
