A shutdown of schools in Los Angeles, the nation’s second-largest education system, could be imminent after a union representing workers announced a three-day strike planned for next week.
After almost a year of negotiations, members of SEIU Local 99, otherwise known as Education Workers United, voted to approve a strike that will be held on Tuesday, March 21 through Thursday, March 23.
The strike will be held with support from the district’s teacher’s union, United Teachers Los Angeles, which represents 35,000 local educators. They said they will honor the strike and will not cross picket lines imposed by workers.
Thousands of members, including bus drivers and cafeteria workers, of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) are demanding more full-time work, equitable wage increases, respectful treatment, and increased staffing to encourage better student services.
The union claims the school district has participated in “unfair practices” and since April 2022, has made little progress in negotiations.
SEIU Local 99 declared that talks had reached a dead end and in December, a state mediator was appointed to oversee further communication between the two parties.
In February, 96% of LAUSD school workers represented by SEIU Local 99 authorized the strike.
In a press release, SEIU Local 99 said, “Throughout the strike vote and during the bargaining process, workers have been subjected to surveillance, intimidation, and harassment by the school district. Dozens of unfair labor practice charges have been filed with the California Public Employee Relations board to protest LAUSD’s unlawful interference in workers’ right to vote and participate in union activities.”
According to SEIU Local 99 Executive Director Max Arias, workers live off of “poverty wages” and the average salary of workers at LAUSD is $25,000 a year.
On March 16, SEIU Local 99 tweeted, “STRIKE ALERT-March 21-23. Thousands of cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, special education assistants and other essential school workers @LASchools will lead a three-day strike to protest the school district’s unfair practices. @UTLAnow Teachers will be joining.” WATCH:

That school system needs to be shut down just on stupidity itself! Maybe the kids can learn reading, writing and arithmetic instead of gender crap and sexual positions!
How about actually educating the students. I think maybe students academic performance in the 3 r,s should determine the best teachers pay oh no can’t have that, let the perversion indoctrination continue. And you wonder why,Students graduating from high schools. Can barely read or write or do basic math. [email protected]&k the teachers union.

If the teachers did their jobs and the kids were able to read, write and do math things would probably be a different story for the teachers. The good teachers are either run out or told to do the progressives bidding and indoctrinate their students into being SJW’s and socialists or lose their jobs.
Do the unions know how the state or district is supposed to even come up with the money?
Best thing to happen to this shitty school system
These are not the teachers. They are mostly the part time workers, 30 hrs a week. They work 9 months, $2800 a month. If my math is correct, they earn about $23 an hour. Not horrible pay. They demand higher pay – ok LA is expensive. They want full time hours, but what are they going to do after the students go home or the cafeteria is done for the day? All of these jobs aren’t full time capable. Janitors probably are the ones that need the raises.
They demand respect – ???
What will the bus drivers do when there aren’t kids to bus?
Get another job or a second job.
