An Indiana couple [has] been charged with abandoning their adopted daughter who has dwarfism and moving to Canada after legally changing the child’s age from eight to 22 and renting an apartment for her to live alone in an unfamiliar city.
Tippecanoe County prosecutors filed neglect charges on Wednesday against Kristine Elizabeth Barnett, 45, and her ex-husband, Michael Barnett, 43, following a five-year criminal investigation.
The article goes on to state the following:
The Barnetts previously made national headlines when Kristine published a book in 2014 about raising her son Jacob, described as a child physics prodigy with IQ higher than that of Albert Einstein, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of two.
In 2012, CBS’ “60 Minutes” interviewed Jacob, then 13, and his parents. Their “adopted special-needs daughter” appears to be in one segment of the production, the Daily Mail reports.
Kristine denies the allegations and says her adopted daughter is an adult.
WISH-TV further reports:
“Kristine provided a letter to News 8 that claims to be from Michael’s doctor at IU Health, who also treated the girl at one time. IU Health refuses to confirm to News 8 if the document is genuine.
“The letter states the girl’s date of birth on her birth certificate is “clearly inaccurate.” The letter claims that evidence of her age can be seen in her teeth, adult sexual development, menstrual cycle and diagnosed sociopathic personality disorder. It even claims the admitted she was over 18 in 2011 and she’s made a career of perpetuating the fraud.”
