Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) criticized President Joe Biden for working with congressional Republican leaders on the debt ceiling talks, saying he is “frustrated” at the president’s choice of avenue to address the crisis.
Biden and Democrats have called for a “clean” debt ceiling increase since the beginning that does not address spending, while Republicans passed a bill in the House in late April that would crack down on spending and raise work requirements for social welfare programs.
Some Democrats, including Bowman, have been critical of the Republican plan and called on Biden to use the 14th Amendment as an option to avoid discussions with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and other GOP leaders.
Bowman told CNN, “I’m very frustrated. I called on the president to invoke the 14th Amendment and mint a coin and do not negotiate with hostage-takers.”
He questioned, “I mean, we don’t negotiate with terrorists globally. Why are we gonna negotiate with the economic terrorists here that are the Republican Party?”
Bowman tweeted, “Bargaining with the lives of communities across the country is not an option. If it comes down to a deal that throws working class families under the bus or @POTUS invoking the 14th Amendment to avoid default, the choice is clear. We need to be ready.”

“One way or another, Republicans are trying to force a default on America. @SpeakerMcCarthy wants to slash programs for families and kids so he can hand those dollars to rich donors. Otherwise, he’s threatening to blow up the global economy. We can’t let them get away with it. Since Republicans’ won’t be honest about their goals, I’ll tell you the truth. They’re trying to: 🧑🏽🏫Eliminate 100,000 jobs for teachers & support staff 👩🏻⚕️Put health insurance coverage at risk for 21 mil Americans 🍽️Put food assistance at risk for nearly 1 mil Americans.”

“And all of these cuts they proposed are so they can hand these dollars over to billionaire donors through trillion dollars worth of tax cuts and slashing the IRS budget. We should not be negotiating with them in the first place. And we have other options. “Republicans and @SpeakerMcCarthy are holding the American people and our economy hostage, and it has to stop. Period, point blank.”
