An unexpected volcanic eruption in New Zealand has trapped dozens of tourists, including several Americans.

White Island, which touts itself as “New Zealand’s most active volcano,” erupted without warning on Sunday, killing five and leaving dozens trapped. Authorities reported that around 50 people were known to be on the island volcano when it erupted, but only 23 have been rescued.

The article goes on to state the following:

Authorities in New Zealand do not expect the remaining missing people to be found alive, as ash continues to hang in the air on the island.

statement from authorities reads: “No signs of life have been seen at any point. Police believe that anyone who could have been taken from the island alive was rescued at the time of the evacuation. Based on the information we have, we do not believe there are any survivors on the island.”

ABC News reported that at least five people were killed and many more remain missing after the eruption.

An American couple on their honeymoon. Matthew and Lauren Urey, were reportedly on the island when the volcano erupted, and were badly burned. They were rushed to the hospital, but their conditions are unknown. The couple were passengers on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that offered White Island as one of the stops.

One of the tourists who had just gotten off the island 20 minutes before the eruption, posted a series of horrifying videos and photos of the incident. He wrote, “My god, White Island volcano in New Zealand erupted today for first time since 2001. My family and I had gotten off it 20 minutes before, were waiting at our boat about to leave when we saw it. Boat ride home tending to people our boat rescued was indescribable.”

“This is so hard to believe. Our whole tour group were literally standing at the edge of the main crater not 30 minutes before. My thoughts with the families of those currently unaccounted for, the people recovering now, and especially the rescue workers,” Schade wrote in another tweet.
