Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said Friday he is “laying down the foundation” for a possible 2024 presidential run that could see him face off against former President Donald Trump.
The Republican governor said that testimony given to the House Jan. 6 committee over the past three weeks has shown that Trump “acted irresponsibly” and was a “risk to the nation.”
The article goes on to state the following:
“That’s not the behavior we want to see in a responsible president,” he told CBS Mornings. “I will not be supporting him for 2024.”
Hutchinson said that the events surrounding Jan. 6 prove that Trump can no longer be an effective leader.
He continued, “We have to go in a different direction for our country, for my party. I want to be a voice for commonsense conservatism, and we’ll see how that resonates.”
The governor is not seeking reelection in Arkansas because of terms limits but said he plans to test the waters to see “if that is something that is going to be helpful to our country.”
Hutchinson said, “No decision will be made until after this election in 2022.”
Reporter Bo Erickson tweeted Friday, “AR Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) says Jan 6 testimony shows Trump was a ‘threat to our democracy. I would not be supporting him for 2024. He acted irresponsibly, during that time he was a risk to the nation, absolutely,’ he tells @edokeefe.”
