MINNEAPOLIS – The manslaughter trial for former Minnesota Police Officer Kim Potter is set to begin with opening statements on Wednesday, nearly eight months after the veteran cop shot and killed Daunte Wright while trying to arrest the young Black man during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb.

Potter, 49, had been an officer for 26 years and was working for the Brooklyn Center Police Department on April 11, 2021, when she and other officers, including a trainee, attempted to stop Wright and then tried to arrest him after learning of a warrant for his arrest. Wright, 20, can be seen in a police video climbing back into the driver’s seat of a vehicle as the officers scuffle with him.

The article goes on to state the following:

In Potter’s body camera video from the shooting, she can be heard yelling, “I’ll tase you!” and “Taser! Taser! Taser!” before firing her handgun.

After firing her gun instead of her taser, Potter was then heard saying, “I grabbed the wrong f—— gun,” and “Holy s—, I just shot him.”

Days later she resigned from the police department, and was then charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter.

Potter’s attorney has said she will testify in her own defense during the trial.

Attorney Ben Crump is already proclaiming Potter guilty, tweeting, “With opening statements of Kim Potter’s trial beginning this week, let us all remember how this 26-year police veteran recklessly killed Daunte Wright during a traffic stop! She needs to be held accountable for his death!”

  1. I hope and pray Kim Potter is found NOT guilty! This was a very sad and unfortunate “accident” and Yes, I said “accident” that could happen to ANY Cop on the street! It could have happened to me! People really need to stop and realize the amount of pressure Cops are under every day (especially today). People need to put themselves in the shoes of a Cop and understand what happens and “can happen” in the “heat of the moment when split second decisions and actions take place! Policing is NOT an easy job, it is very difficult and people need to understand that!!!

  2. I also want to say that Maxine Waters is a total asshole if she thinks that a Cop is looking down at their waist when they are frantically grabbing for a weapon in the heat of the moment not to mention that if it is dark and at night when something like this incident occurs! That Taser may be bright yellow, but it isn’t fluorescent and doesn’t “glow in the dark” NOT that you are even looking down in a situation like this! Your eyes are fixed on the threat or target!!!

  3. At the same time though, any police officer that doesn’t know the difference between their handgun and their taste, does not ever need to be on the police force, regardless of the pressure or difficulty of the job. No American needs to believe that at any moment, you can be killed rather than tased because of incompetent police officers who fail their duty under pressure. I say this, knowing that it has not been proven that this officer had any malice, however, to whatever degree it was an accident, an accident does not justify the horrific nature of this accident. She may not be justifiably charged with murder, but I can see her being justifiably charged with something negligent related, or whatever one can be charged with for committing an accidental killing.

    • James, ANY Cop KNOWS the difference between their duty weapon and a taser in NORMAL circumstances, however, this was NOT a NORMAL circumstance it was a hot call where split second decisions had to be made and actions were taken in the “heat of the moment! Unless you are or have EVER been a COP you have absolutely NO idea what you would do in this situation!!! You have two “guns” on your leather gear…how do YOU know that in the heat of the moment you would NOT mistakenly choose the wrong one??? We are ALL humans and sadly humans DO make mistakes!!! NOBODY is perfect!!! I am NOT saying she should NOT be charged with negligence but she definitely should NOT be charged with 1st or 2nd degree manslaughter!

  4. What happened to innocent until proven guilty???? When a police officer tells you to stop, you stop! It was the decision he made to try to get away that got him killed. Police officers put their life on the line for us everyday. Unless you were there you have no right to call her guilty!
