Virginia teacher Byron “Tanner” Cross saw an outpouring of support Tuesday as public commenters blasted a school system’s decision to suspend him after his now-viral comments about gender.

The dramatic meeting of the Loudon County Public Schools’ board was full of mic- drop moments and testy confrontations over issues plaguing the school district. Many public commenters either backed Cross or criticized the school board over critical race theory (CRT).

The article goes on to state the following:

“Where is your regard for our freedom of speech?” asked parent Rachel Pisani, who said she was a mother of three in Loudoun County. “When I saw a teacher express an opinion and suspended for expressing his religious beliefs, I could no longer stay silent. When did it become acceptable to be tolerant only when someone expresses a view that we agree with? When did it become appropriate to silence those that hold Christian, biblical views just because you don’t? When did it become appropriate to allow the school board – I don’t know who you think you are – but it is not appropriate, it is not allowable to silence, bully, or dismiss our views.”

Below is Pisani’s fiery speech:

Pisani’s mic was cut off after she spoke longer than her allotted time, but she kept going, and the room erupted in applause.  This prompted Chairwoman Brenda Sheridan’to demand, “Give me the gavel.”  She then announced the board will take a 5-minute recess and told the audience to find its “decorum.”

One teacher gave a speech that set the place ‘on fire.’ Lilit Vanetsyan said she had a message of encouragement for parents, teachers and students who are too afraid to come and speak up.

“Parents, the longer that you wait and you don’t hold your child’s school accountable gives these guys more time to dictate what’s best for your child’s physical, mental and emotional health,” Vanetsyan began.

She said parents should be afraid that their kids will be rooting for socialism by the time they get to middle school.

“Teachers, it may seem that our careers have come to a dead, but I’m here to remind you, we don’t work for the school board. We work to mold the next generation of well-rounded American patriots, so don’t give up because it is up to us.”

“Students, you’re on the front lines of these indoctrination camps. Challenge the staff when you’re presented with a ludicrous statement, and do not allow anybody to tell you that you cannot accomplish anything because of your skin color, or to hate yourself because of your skin colors. Students, it is up to you to be the next generation of victims or victors!”

Her mic was cut off as well when she went over her time, and again, the room erupted in applause.

Teacher Lilit Vanetsyan is actually no stranger to the microphone. She is a correspondent for Right Side Broadcasting Network and was on duty at a Trump rally in Florida last year.

Journalist Anna Nawaz shared details of the meeting in a series of Twitter posts:

I’m at a Loudoun County school board meeting. Packed room. A debate over critical race theory in schools has divided this community in recent weeks. Tonight, for the first time in the pandemic, the public was allowed back in to these meetings.

Protestors started gathering outside long before the meeting began. Parents who oppose the district’s equity efforts as they’ve been rolled out are organizing to oust school board members.

One of the school board members just said 121 members of the public signed up to speak tonight.

One parent opposing critical race theory in schools tells board members “just teach children without your political agenda” – says teaching kids about systemic racism divides them. (For the record, the superintendent says critical race theory is not taught in schools).

Board is back. Comments continue. Parent after parent, and some former students, saying trust has been broken, that “one side’s agenda” is being imposed on the other, and those who disagree are being “silenced.”

One parent says she’s very worried about what she’s seeing in schools:
“Training our children to be social justice warriors” and “to hate our country”

Parents repeatedly calling for “better communication” and “transparency” from school board. They’re asking for access to all the equity training teachers receive. They want advance notice of potential big contracts (>$5k) with a public comment period.

One parent: “I will fight to the bitter end…if you teach my children that they are racist just because they’re white”

Another mom, self-identifies as Christian, says she leads with love, does not see skin color. To school board: “know this. We will not yield. We will not let you have the souls of our children.”

A former teacher at the podium says educators should be neutral. Says teachers are being “forced to teach progressive values” including equity and she feels her 1st Amendment rights are being violated.

“It’s not fair that far left teachers can express their views, but conservative teachers like myself get bullied and retaliated against” – a teacher from a neighboring district speaking now.

The school board also voted in a new superintendent during the meeting Tuesday night.

Below is the now-viral speech by teacher Byron Tanner Cross two weeks ago. The school suspended him for his remarks, but a judge has now ordered that he be reinstated:

  1. Well, this is encouraging. Nice to read some good news for a change. As others have said, maybe the sleeping giant has been awakened. 👏

  2. Praise be to God! All parents should be speaking up, nationwide! Conservative teachers should be speaking up as well. Just teach our kids without a political agenda. Screw CRT! It just divides. Screw the liberals who think they can just railroad their way through. School Boards should be neutral. Schools should be neutral.

  3. Absolute imperative that we the people start fighting back against the liberal progressive morons that have infiltrated our education system. It is time for parents and good teachers to fight these people and just TEACH the kids instead of forcing socialist views on them. We are a democratic republic and NOT a communist country!!!

  4. I hope the rest of my state is watching this event. I will have a fit if my grandson has to deal with this crap in school next year.

  5. Climate change and systematic racism is the biggest political Hoax ever created by the New Socialist Democratic Party is trying to divide us because United We Stand and Divided We Will Fall

  7. This discussion should be going on in every school, every university, every state! We must defeat this rhetoric! It is dangerous for us and future generations!

    • Absolutely. Parents have to look out for their children and, in so doing, will be looking out for our Country and it’s future.

  8. God bless the courageous parents and others who spoke out in the defense of our first amendment rights!
