Major recall on popular meat contaminated with plastic shards

In this DML Report…
Johnsonville, LLC, based in Momence, Illinois, issued a voluntary recall for 22,672 pounds of its cheddar bratwurst after two customers reported finding hard plastic in the product. The recalled items are 19-ounce sealed tray packages containing five “Johnsonville BRATS CHEDDAR Bratwurst” sausages with the package code B9FOD and establishment number “Est. 1647” on the label. The sausages were distributed to retailers in Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin, and authorities are concerned some may still be in consumers’ freezers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall, noting that hard plastic poses risks of choking or dental injury. No injuries have been reported, but consumers are urged not to eat the affected bratwurst and to either discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Johnsonville was alerted to the issue after direct consumer complaints, prompting the company to notify FSIS and initiate the recall to prevent potential harm.

The recall follows a similar issue with Tony’s Chocolonely chocolates, highlighting ongoing concerns about foreign materials in food products. Consumers in the affected states are advised to check their freezers and act promptly to avoid health risks.
