FDA issues another recall on popular condiment product

In this DML Report…
Red Shell Foods has initiated a recall of nearly 1,000 bottles of its Teriyaki Sauce due to signs of microbial growth, including bubbling and swelling containers, which could indicate spoilage. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a notice on April 9, classifying the recall as a Class II event, meaning the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health issues. The affected bottles, distributed primarily in California, were sold in 12-ounce and 1-gallon sizes, and consumers are urged to discard them immediately.

The FDA has not reported any illnesses or deaths linked to the recalled teriyaki sauce, but the presence of bacteria, mold, or yeast—indicated by the bubbling—poses a potential risk. Such microbial growth often results from manufacturing errors, like faulty lids, allowing organisms to contaminate the product and release gases that cause swelling. Red Shell Foods is working with the FDA to investigate the issue and has provided a distribution list to help identify affected products, though specific lot numbers or expiration dates were not detailed in the announcement.

Separately, the FDA also recalled several varieties of Texas Pete’s CHAbanero hot sauce due to undeclared sulfites, which can trigger serious allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. The recall includes six other hot sauce varieties missing a listed ingredient, aged peppers, on their labels. No illnesses have been reported from the hot sauce recall either, and customers can return the products for a refund. Both recalls highlight ongoing concerns about food safety and proper labeling in the industry.
